People out there that happen to know me, either by being a committer on different open source projects or by being a former colleague, have noticed that I was really quiet during the last months. And I guess it was a good reason for this: I have been working with an wonderfull team to set up a new community site or as I call it the über-community site: InfoQ.
I know that things I will say may sound subjective, but trust me as a technologist and also an avid reader: this will be a place that you will really enjoy to visit and read. We have some cool features that we know are unique and our main focus is on our readers. I know that almost every site coming up may have the same slogans, but check out our initial set of features presented by the other co-founder of InfoQ: Floyd Marinescu (who, I guess everybody knows, have a tremendous experience when speaking about the technology community). Check also the the About us page to see our developement team and editors and I am sure that you will already have a measure of what our intentions are.
The team of InfoQ is a team of perfectionists when speaking about serving well the clients, and having in mind that we consider as our clients all the technology people out there, we decided to be frank with all of you: we are still in an unlaunched phase (or as others call it beta phase). We have plenty things to improve and for this we need your feedback. That's why we have an open bug/feature/suggestion list opened at bugs[at]infoq[dot]com and everything that will come in will be analysed by our team.
Let me know how do you feel about it and what do you think we can improve to become the place you are passionate about.

Looking very, very smooth there. Congratulations on the (beta) launch.
So, when do we get to see you again at OS ? :)
Hi Philip!
You know me... I will get back there very soon. Just a couple of days to recover and than I'll be back. And by the way, I have a surprise for WebWork/Struts TI :-).
InfoQ does not work properly with Javascript disabled, nor it warns a user that Javascript is required. As such, when I click on an "Articles" or "Books" tab in the "Exclusive content" section, I get : Oops! The server couldn't find the requested information." When I click on "Presentations" or "Interviews" I get no reactiona at all.
You need either to require Javascript and warn about it, or to adjust features according to browser capabilities.
Hi Michael and thanks for the feedback! These days I guess that javascript is pretty needed/used and I would be very interested to find out some statistics about it.
There is a lot of talk about nice degradation of sites, but as I guess you might expect, before jumping to do it we have to balance benefits vs costs. And, afaik, we are not alone doing this :-) (even Google with its GMail service hasn't had support for all browsers, nor nice degradation for quite a very long period).
best regards,
./alex

As I said, I am ok with a website that requires Javascript, but in this case it has to verify that browser has Javascript turned on and if not, it has to display warning message that some features are not available. You mentioned Google. Try turning Javascript off and then run GMail, see what it tells you. I expect InfoQ and other Javascript-dependent sites to display similar kind of warning.
Also, with Javascript turned on and Ajax working, when I click the tab it is activated, but its color is not changed until I move mouse pointer off the tab. Not very intuitive :)
Michael, as I said, I agree with you and we are moving towards this. As for gmail, I was talking about its beginnings (remember InfoQ it's only 3 weeks old).
I am aware of the tab problem and it looks like it is a bug in FF (iirc it is working correctly in IE).
We are planning in growing and always improving InfoQ. So, this is just the beginning. With the right feedback, we will be able to make it wonderful (if it is not already [smile/]).
cheers,
./alex
