I happen to met and know a couple of Romanians working on Java open source projects (f.e. Theodor Danciu: JasperReports, Costin Leau: Spring, SpringModules).
But I am wondering what the real number is? What is the involvement of Romanian developers into OSS projects (I am not looking only for Java related projects)? I am wondering how is this work seen by the companies they are working for?
If you are one of the OSS Romanian developers please ping me. I would definitely like to hear more from you, hear the problems you are facing while doing this kind of work (if any). Step out and tell us more about you!

Still waiting for an active JUG in Bucharest.

These are the first steps towards it ;-). But I would like to figure out what local resources we have, because in the beginning it will be really difficult to have international presenters.

Well, I am trying to be one! I must say I have the opensource enthusiasm and I also have tried to do something about it! :-) Here is a project I have been working for about an year until the last summer: http://wedge.sourceforge.net.
Since I haven't got any kind of feedback from the comunity, at a certain point I got tired of the project. I have noticed that it takes a lot of energy and time to develop a project like this.
And on the other hand the project is somehow outdated by the AJAX times we're passing through!
I was looking very close to DOJO but know I believe that integrating Echo2 into the paradigm of Wedge would be a better idea.
Hope that someday I will get the to start it all over again. And this time with better succes! ;-)
Anyway, it's such a good thing to see someone interested in the opensource initiative in Romania.
PS: Costin, Theodor, Floyd and you, of course, allow us to believe that we are not only opensource users but we are also capable of giving something back! Thank you!
well, i have many small contributions/patches to maven, wicket, gwt, catalina, but nothing on my own, not a real project; i dont consider myself a opensource contributor, i would like get involved more, but you know, fulltime job, life, friends etc ... and a day has only 24 hours, damn it :).
you asked how this opensource work is seen by employers, well, at least the company i was/am working for, they dont care as long as montly profit is on target and their business is going on;
and my employers dont realise that all our product suite is based on opensource projects, but still dont care, it is what it is ...
besides that, i can bet that any of you out there uses at least two opensource projects in at his daily job.
anyway, like cristian said, it is nice thing to see more and more people interested in opensource.

Hi Alex,
This may not be the best place to post this, but I thought I'd give it a try.
Do you know if there are developers in Romania that can do overseas contract work? I am currently working on developing a rather complex website that is far beyond my ability.
Anyway, I plan on visiting Romania in the spring as I have family there. And was wondering what would be a good way to get in touch with one such developer.
Thank you
